John S. Shurick married Lorina G. Aveline February 20, 1868 in Allen County, Indiana. The ceremony was performed by the minister of Wayne Street Methodist Church. Lorina died February 6, 1882, at her home in Fort Wayne. She is buried at Lindenwood Cemetery, Lot 64, Section B. Her obituary says she was born in Fort Wayne To Francis S. and Junia A. Aveline on March 1, 1846. The city directories from 1879 to 1883 listed John Shurick as co-owner of Shurick & Olds, maker of staves and heading and cooperage, located south of the Wabash Railway between Lafayette and Calhoun. What happened to John after the death of his Lorina (Lavina) is unsure. I had it completely wrong at first and with the assistance of a friend out of Fort Wayne, Indiana, I was set straight on a few misconceptions. Now remains some still unanswered questions: In a August 6th, 1882 Fort Wayne Daily Gazette newspaper, there was a small mention as follows: "Fort Wayne gossip says that John Shurick, esq., of the firm of Shurick & Olds, and Mrs. Frances H. Baldwin, daughter of the late Dr. S. R. Roxford, will be married some time during the next two weeks, and will spend the honey-moon at eastern watering places - Indianapolis Journal." Investigating this to see if John married Frances, my friend from Fort Wayne was unable to find any record that found this to be true. As he put it, Lorina, Johns wife, died February 1882 and it would have seemed odd that John would have married so quick (August 1882) after her death. He did add, though, that John had children to tend too so maybe it wouldn't have been so far fetched. So John must have left Fort Wayne around 1883 and headed back to Pennsalyvania where he met Anna Palmes, my great grandmother. From Pennsalyvania he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he spent the remainder of his life as a Railroad Insurance man. The following is quoted from the obituary article in regards to John Shurick as follows: VETERAN RISK MAN IS DEAD John S. Shurick succumbs after long illness at his home in Minneapolis. John S. Shurick, 72 years old, a veteran insurance man of Minnesota, died at his home, 3406 Fifteenth Avenue South, Minneapolis, yesterday morning, his death following a protracted illness. Mr. Shurick has spent more than thirty years of his life in Minnesota and the Twin Cities. He was born near Pittsburgh, Pa in 1842. He was married twice and leaves a widow, Mrs. Anna P. Shurick and three children: Mrs. Charles B. Parker, 363 Goodrich Avenue; Edward P. Shurick, Duluth and Miss Annette Shurick, Minneapolis. The funeral will be held at 2 P.M.
